Tango is a beautiful way to learn how to communicate with one another beyond words. It is a language we learn with every new step. It's about improvising and listening with our whole body, inside the embrace. Welcome to this journey of creative self expression! No experience needed!

This might NOT be for you if :

  • you want to perform tango steps and learn coreographies

  • you want a traditional approach without paying attention to deeper layers of the experience

  • you're not willing to slow down, experiment, make mistakes and occasionally feel a little uncomfortable

  • you feel uncomfortable with the idea of moving in close physical contact with different people.

  • you are looking for therapy or therapeutic program

This is for you if :

  • you've always been curious about Argentine tango, and now feels like the right time to learn the basics.

  • you feel a little disconnected from your body and want to get more in touch with yourself.

  • you're curious about what it feels like to move together with another person.

  • you're always in control and you want to explore trust and surrender

  • you want to boost your confidence with learning how to take more space or take more initiative

  • you're interested in boundaries, trust and connection through embodied exploration

  • you're interested in personal development, but rather than just thinking or reading about it, you want to experience it.

What is different about a course in Tango Garden?

Tango is our main structure and, yes, after the first 3 months, you will be able to dance basic tango steps with confidence and joy.
But, the main focus here is not on learning as many figures as possible in a short time.

The main idea is to find ways to feel connected with your partner, to feel comfortable in your body, and to search for creative expression in your own dance. To support this, we use different tools and approaches to develop connection, body awareness, listening and creativity.

As a somatic therapist, I draw from several disciplines and bring them together within the structure of our tango practice.

You may encounter exercises inspired by yoga, Feldenkrais, somatic therapy and movement meditation. You don't need any previous experience with any of these. They are gently woven into our classes, always in service of the tango and your experience of dancing.

No. The course is designed as a progressive journey, where each week builds on what we have explored together before. We will be developing not only our tango skills, but also our connection and understanding as a group.

For this reason, we begin together and move through the program as one group. If you miss a class, it's not a big deal, life happens. You will easily catch up at the next one, as long as you are committed to the program and try to attend regularly.

Do I need a partner?

No. You don't need a partner, and you don't need any experience.
We will exchange partners and roles during the classes.

"I feel really lucky that Ana was my very first tango teacher. 💛 Through tango — and through her work and workshops — I discovered completely new inner worlds. More than anything, I learned how to be more present and aware of what’s happening within me. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone who wants to reconnect with their body and experience a new sense of freedom in movement.

Important things to know about tango

Tango is a partner dance

Traditionally, there are two roles in partner dancing: a leader and a follower. Traditionally, the leader is a man and the follower is a woman. Today, as times are changing, tango is changing too, and these traditional roles are no longer so strict. You can choose which role you would like to dance, and in our course, you will have the opportunity to learn both. This also means that most probably in our course there won't be equal number of men and women, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy exploring polarity dynamics inside a couple.

Tango is a social dance

Dancing tango is a social activity. We meet new people, we get to know them, we hang out during the events, and sometimes we form real friendships. While learning to dance, we change partners often. Through this, we learn to adapt to different bodies, movements, and personalities, and this is what eventually makes us good dancers: our ability to listen and adapt. I might add, this also makes you more open to different people in life, as well as better understanding where are your boundaries.

If you find changing partners challenging, your feelings are completely valid. However, other ways of learning, like individual lessons, might be more suitable for you.

Tango is intimate and sensual dance measured by the feeling and not by performance

Today, there are many forms of tango. Different schools and styles see it differently and put emphasis on different things. The way that I see it - it's an intimate conversation between two people. It's a shared creative expression of two bodies. It has it's rules and principles like any other physical discipline, (and we will pay a lot of attention to them), but it's most interesting part is dancing inside the embrace. Improvising steps and synchronising with another human being in real time, has the profound effect on the dancer. See it for yourself and let me know. ;)

Tango is hard, but rewarding

Honestly, tango is not one of the easiest dances to learn. In fact, you will probably be considered a beginner for the first couple of years.

That is why we will take things slowly and with a specific structure in mind, so that you can really understand what you are doing and give your body time to learn the movements. Paradoxically, this is the fastest ways to actually progress. The good thing with tango is that joy and pleasure are available form the first step, no matter your level or expertise.
Social comparison though, this is tough, but we'll get to there later. ;)
